Staff Nurse, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Katie Cortes, BSN, RN, OCN is a registered nurse on the bone marrow transplant unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center. She joined MSK’s Green Reps Committee in 2016 and later co-founded a sustainability committee on her unit. In this role, Katie works to develop, promote, and educate staff on sustainability initiatives within the healthcare setting. She is an active member of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE). Katie earned her bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Molloy College and is currently working towards a master’s degree in Community/Public Health Nursing at Hunter College.
In acute care settings, nurses comprise 35-40% of staff. Nurses are present in most clinical situations and have deep understanding of care processes.
