Staff Nurse, Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Katie Cortes, BSN, RN, OCN is a staff nurse on the bone marrow transplant unit at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She joined her hospital’s Green Team in 2016 and later co-founded a sustainability committee on her unit. In this role, Katie works with committee members to develop, promote, and educate staff on sustainability initiatives including energy efficiency, waste/paper reduction, and recycling within the healthcare setting. She is an active member of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE). Katie earned her undergraduate degree from Molloy College and is currently enrolled in Hunter College’s MS program in Community/Public Health Nursing.
In acute care settings, nurses comprise 35-40% of staff. Nurses are present in most clinical situations and have deep understanding of care processes.
