B7 – Critical Access Hospital Success Story: Leading through Community Partnerships

Music Row 6

Westfields Hospital & Clinic is a sustainability leader in the community. From the on-site farmer’s market and community garden, to the rotating healing arts displays and collaborations with many different like-minded local organizations this critical access hospital has far extended its impact beyond the walls of the campus. With leadership support and encouragement, the Green Team has adopted on-site and community solar, decreasing facility energy use by over 30 percent in just four short years.

Westfields has been recognized by local and national organizations for sustainable operations in sustainable food (2018 Circles of Excellence), Greening the OR, sustainable grounds management (Audubon International) and sustainable procurement and waste management. Westfields commitment to community health and well-being is illustrated in the investment this rural western Wisconsin hospital has made in providing services not often seen in similar communities.

Facility leadership has supported and endorsed a multitude of community benefit initiatives that have a direct and immediate impact on the health of the region. The medicine take-back program has collected over 150 pounds of medicine from the community for proper disposal since the kiosk was installed in February 2018. This important benefit to the community keeps the medicines out of the environment and helps to stem the opioid epidemic that is sweeping the nation, and has hit rural communities particularly hard.

In addition, Westfields has embraced improving the health and well-being of our youngest community members too by providing veggie prescriptions to those in need and giving locally sourced vegetables away at community events from our mobile farmer’s market. Westfields comprehensive and far reaching sustainability programs are coordinated with and support the facility’s well-being programs and the facility’s collaboration with local organizations such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and New Richmond High School leverage the resources of each organization to provide a healthier, happier and more equitable community for all.
